There is a folktale from my Indonesian family about my grandmother’s grandfather. He was a shepherd that used to walk across Java to bring his herd to Jakarta. Whenever he encountered a mountain tiger, he would sacrifice one of his cows for the tiger to eat and allow him to pass through Java safely. As a child, I would imagine myself walking through the Javanese jungle encountering these mountain tigers.
